A policing ward in Bexley has become the first in the borough to have a neighbourhood watch covering every street.

East Wickham ward, which covers most of Welling, contains 90 streets in total - and every single one of them is keeping an eye out for criminals.

After wards were changed in May, East Wickham gained 24 streets, so officers and neighbourhood watch groups in the borough got to work in trying to make sure they had eyes everywhere.

Sargeant Bryan Young told News Shopper: "In Welling the fear of crime is quite high but the level of crime is quite low."

He added when he had been stationed in Welling in 2015 before the boundary change, he had encouraged neighbours to create groups in every street and it proved helpful.

"We're trying to reduce fear of crime and running neighbourhood watch groups lets criminals know people are looking out."

At the moment, there are three officers stationed across the ward, and they try to visit a street on every shift to speak to a neighbourhood watch co-ordinator.

Sgt Young said: "I'm hoping it will have a positive effect in deterring crime and letting people know the community is more vigilant.

"It could help to provide more information about suspicious people."

People who are worried about crime in the area can contact their ward officers to share their concerns by emailing the team with their street name, and the officers can send information about neighbourhood watch action in the area.
