This October brings the annual celebration of black history back to Croydon with a busy programme of performances and exhibitions.

The influence of black history on Croydon’s cultural programme runs throughout the year.

However October has traditionally become the month when the focus for arts in the borough turns to the African and Caribbean roots of modern music, drama and art.

Sara Bashford, cabinet member for customer services, culture and sport, said: “We’ve got a huge wealth of talent in the UK - and many of our greatest artists and performers trace their lineage back to Africa and the Caribbean.

“Croydon itself can take pride from the fact that so many people from so many different cultures live here side-by-side.

“I think that 2010 will be one of the most vibrant and engaging black history months that we have ever seen, and it will be great to see hundreds of people getting involved in the celebrations throughout October.”

This year’s programme wraps education and entertainment up into a diverse and exciting package of shows, ranging from drumming workshops, theatre and storytelling to MC workshops and even an all-ages dominoes competition.
