Ruben Loftus-Cheek’s dad has accused Jose Mourinho of stalling the Chelsea midfielder’s career.

Trever Loftus-Cheek hit out at the former Blues boss after his son put in a man-of-the-match display on his England debut against Germany on Friday.

The 21-year-old made a handful of first-team appearances under Mourinho, who opted for experience over youth.

Loftus-Cheek received his first senior England call-up after showing glimpses of his quality in a struggling Crystal Palace side. He joined the Eagles on a season-long loan in search of regular football.

And dad Trevor told the Daily Mail: “Jose Mourinho held him back. He should have been playing.

“Everyone behind the scenes was asking ‘why isn’t he playing?’

“If Ruben was playing for Mauricio Pochettino, he’d have 70, 80, 90 first-team appearances by now.

“People within the Academy system have been aware for a long time about him and I’m just happy to see him breakthrough and the loan to Crystal Palace has really helped.

“It’s good because [England manager] Gareth Southgate can change what is happening in club football when he makes selections such as this.”
