A reckless rubbish truck driver has been suspended after he was filmed reversing into a £30,000 Lexus parked in the street.

Yesterday footage emerged showing the Croydon Council lorry backing up and smashing into the front of the stationary sports car outside the Cat Ba Island restaurant in South End on Monday morning.

Veolia, the company that runs Croydon Council's waste collection services, confirmed the driver has been suspended from work today during an investigation.

The company, which is also contracted to collect waste for several other London councils, said it would provide college principal Pathmamohan Muhilan, the owner of the Lexus, with a replacement car while his is repaired.

A Veolia spokeswoman said: "We have launched a full investigation into the incident and our driver has been suspended pending its outcome.

“Our insurers have contacted Mr Muhilan to repair his car and provide a replacement vehicle.

“All of our drivers receive extensive vehicle handling and safety training and we take any failures to comply with these requirements extremely seriously.”

Although the truck initially stopped when it first made contact with the car, the footage shows the driver then continued to reverse, shunting the Lexus out of shot.

As the video ends, the driver of the truck can be seen getting out of his cab and strolling towards the smashed-up motor.

The driver then left without leaving any details, according to the owner of the Lexus.

Mr Muhilan, principal of Croydon Metropolitan College, said he only realised what had happened after viewing the CCTV from the nearby Apatura Restaurant.

He contacted Croydon Council to complain about the damage to his car, which he said cost him £30,000 to buy new.
